What is granite?
Granite is an igneous rock that is formed under the earth’s surface from its magma, which contains many minerals. These minerals include but are not limited to, quartz, feldspar and mica. The name granite derives from the Latin word “granum”, which means grain. Granite gains its own unique and distinct texture from this grainy feature.
Why is Granite so popular?
Granite has become such a high demand in homes due to its beauty and durability. It is stain, scratch and heat resistant, it requires little maintenance, and it adds tremendous value to your home.
What are the different types of finishes?
A polished finish is the most common of the choices. This finish will give your home a distinct and elegant look. It is easy to maintain and its sparkling appearance brings out the colors in the granite. This finish can be described as glossy, shiny and mirror-like.
Honed finishes are becoming more and more popular. This finish is smooth but has a matte finish. This finish will give your home a more casual and contemporary feel while maintaining the elegant look.
A leathered finish is created by using diamond tipped brushes across the surface conveying the look and feel of leather. This is a rough texture and it is more ideal for outside kitchens, however it can be used indoors.
Can I place hot pans or cut on granite countertops?
Granite can withstand extremely high temperatures since it is formed beneath the earth’s crust. If you place a hot pan or kettle on the surface it will not damage the stability or color. It is still advisable to use trivets.
Knives will not scratch your countertops. Diamonds are the only substance that can cut your granite.
Is it necessary to seal my countertops?
Yes! Stone surfaces are very porous and will absorb liquids. If liquids are absorbed, the color of your countertops will become discolored and stained. Granite is sealed during fabrication but it is recommended you reseal your countertops once a year.
How often does Granite need to be cleaned/maintained?
Just like any other countertop, it is recommended you clean and wipe down regularly. You want your countertops to continue looking beautiful. If a spill or a build up occurs, you should clean it with a non-abrasive product.
